The Louisiana Women’s team attended the Southern Senior Cup representing all 5 age divisions for the first time is several years and placed in all divisions.
The 35s team members were Jennifer Marsh, Julie Lessinter, and Christine Dodge.They upset the #2 GA team in first round even with Julie suffering a severe arm injury but finishing and winning her singles match.35s lost their last 2 matches but placed 4th in the age division.
The 45s team seeded #2 were Elizabeth Brinson who won all 3 of her singles matches, Elizabeth Chesteen, and Kathryn Scurlock.Beating AL in the first round, they advanced but the competition was extremely tough and ended up placing 4th.
55s team consists of Bobbie Miles, Sandy Childress, Madeline Raymond, and Vicki Owen.Losing to #1 seed SC in 1st round, they played and won 3 more matches to win Consolation.
The 65s team members were a repeat of several years going into the Cup.They were Peggy Andry, Jan Pierson, Diane Simpson, and Captain, BJ Johnson.Seeded #1, they lost in the finals to NC to finish in 2nd place.
The 75s team was without previous years’ Lucille Cooper but with great play from team members Gwen Pablovich, Carolyn Kramer, and Maurice Wilkins, they finished in 4th place.
Southern and Louisiana Tennis Hall of Famer Lester Sack of New Orleanshelped lead the Louisiana men’s squad to a 4th place finish behind Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee at the 2012 Southern Senior Cup held in Huntsville, AL.Sack won all three of his singles matches in straight sets, and then teamed with Louisiana Tennis Hall of Famer Ronnie Fenasci of Baton Rouge to clinch the deciding doubles point in the 2-1 victory over North Carolina in the finals.This is the second straight title for the Louisiana Men’s 75s team which captured the 75s championship in 2011.
The Men’s 45s team was seeded 3rd and defeated Mississippi in the first round.The 45s team suffereda heart-breaking 2-1 loss to top seeded South Carolina in the semifinals. The states split the singles and South Carolina eked out a three set nail biter in the doubles match to secure the win.
The Senior Cup team members on the 75s squad were Lester Sack, Ronnie Fenasci, Bruce Johnson of Baton Rouge, and New Orleanian Charlie Johnson. The 45s team was anchored by Johan Kjellsten of Lake Charles, along with Mark Jeffery of Lafayette, Ged Schwing of Baton Rouge, and Len Minvielle of New Iberia. Team Louisiana was captained by Drew Meyers.
The Southern Senior Cup is known as "The Crown Jewel” of adult competition and brings together the top men and women players from every state in the Southern section in age divisions 35, 45, 55, 65, and 75. Many former touring pros and collegiate players represent their respective states in this event which is played in a Davis Cup-like format. Few events, including USTA national championships, bring as many top caliber players together to compete as does the Southern Senior Cup.
