Paula Bruchhause Education Merit Sectional Award Winner - Wednesday, November 5, 2014
"Tennis is a Lifelong Sport"

Paula Bruchhaus was recently awarded with USTA Education Merit Sectional award for developing an outstanding tennis program providing leadership & inspiration in juniors while benefitting the growth of tennis. Along with this huge achievement she has also been recognized on The Doctors Show and was Prevention Magazine 2010 Picture of Health Winner. She also has received numerous awards including Louisiana Department of Education School Health Award, Heart Association Lifestyle Change Award Winner, Cover of Glove Magazine for weight loss, and much more! Her latest accomplishment was helping out an elementary school where she teaches physical education.

Prien Lake become the first elementary school in Calcasieu Parish to start a tennis program for its students. Paula Bruchhause, school physical education teacher opened the program to grades pre-K through 5 and got 60 students to join. She wanted a program to help students stay active and healthy and she thought this would be the perfect opportunity!

"Tennis is a sport you can play forever. The club will not only help develop a lifelong love for tennis but also will make our kids more competitive for high school sports" said Bruchhause. She also recognized representatives from the United States Professional Tennis Association who helped her start the program and to the local racquet club that provided the equipment for them. Also, fellow teachers have even gotten involved in the tennis club by staying after school to help with practices. "Everyone has pitched in to help get this club going."

Ryan Beeson, a local USPTA professional, helped Bruchhaus with tryouts last week and will assist with weekly practices. His main focus is helping kids get involved in some sort of activity since there are not many in the Lake Area.

"Tennis is something you can keep playing at any age," he said. "There are not many sports where you can do that."

Hopefully there will be more schools that will follow in Bruchhaus's trail, especially since she is also offering to assist other schools in getting their program started or obtaining equipment. Bruchhaus can't wait to see all the kids participating in local youth tennis tournaments in the near future.
