Welcome to Louisiana Tennis Association

Baton Rouge’s Whitfield named 2025 USTA NATIONAL Captain of the Year

 Ron Cioffi | February 23, 2026

USTA has named Wilbert “Doc” Whitfield as the 2025 Captain of the Year. It is the first time this award has been bestowed.

After being named USTA STATE, SOUTHERN, AND NATIONAL Captain of the Year, the section submitted Whitfield’s nomination for the national award.

Whitfield, from Baton Rouge, La., has served as a USTA League captain for 14 years and has led at least 87 teams. He has played on USTA League teams for 37 years. Other honors this year include (GBRCTA) Captain of the Year and USTA Louisiana Captain of the Year.

He was congratulated in a virtual call by USTA Southern President & CEO Ted Reese, Adult League Committee members, section and national staff.

Why is "Doc" deserving?

Why does this captain deserve to be the 2025 USTA Southern Captain of the Year?

USTA Louisiana Director of Adult League Marty Engle wrote:

Wilbert "Doc" Whitfield is a long-standing and devoted USTA League captain whose passion for tennis and dedication to his players truly set him apart. A year-round leader, Doc is the captain of multiple teams and continually goes the extra mile to support player development by organizing weekly practices focused on improvement and camaraderie. Even when he's not competing, he can often be found courtside cheering on his teammates and offering encouragement and strategic insight.

Doc is also widely respected for his inclusivity and generosity. Beyond his established roster, he frequently reviews the "players looking for a team" list to ensure that new or returning players have opportunities to participate. His commitment to growing the game extends beyond his own teams, as he routinely mentors new captains, offering guidance on make-up matches, scheduling, and team management.

Known for his professionalism and reliability, Doc maintains consistent and proactive communication with league coordinators, keeping all details organized and running smoothly. While his teams did not advance to the State Championship in 2025, they have achieved that distinction in past seasons—an achievement that reflects his strong leadership, sportsmanship, and team-building skills.

Wilbert "Doc" Whitfield (blue hat) is feted by members of the Baton Rouge tennis community after he was named USTA Captain of the Year. Wilbert "Doc" Whitfield (blue hat) is feted by members of the Baton Rouge tennis community after he was named USTA Captain of the Year.

Whitfield’s comments

In the application for this award, Whitfield wrote:

“My love for the game was so intense that, during my 34 years as an educator, I attempted to start tennis programs at the schools where I worked. While my attempts to introduce the youth were unsuccessful, that did not stop me from wanting to remain active and play competitive tennis. So, when I retired in 2011 and decided to focus on both my mental and physical health, I organized my first 3.5 men’s team in 2012.

With limited resources and very few players at the start, I began recruiting from the Greater Baton Rouge ‘Players Looking for a Team’ list online. Shortly afterwards in 2016, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer.

After a successful surgery and an expeditious recovery, I was back on the court within four months winning my first doubles match. I’m blessed to say I’m cancer-free and still competing today.

As a Captain, my philosophy has always been to “Practice with a Purpose.” I encourage the players to focus on fundamentals, embrace their mistakes, and make minor adjustments but never allow anger to infiltrate their game. It is my belief that the simple message of “Just keep calm and play tennis!” has played an intricate part in our success on the court and it should never involve throwing the racquet in disgust, blasting balls over the fence, and displaying temper tantrums.

Harrison on the world stage in 2025

Hometown Hero: The Rise of Christian Harrison

In the heart of Louisiana, where tennis has been a thread through generations, the story of Christian Harrison is one that inspires, uplifts, and reflects the deep roots of a family legacy.

Born into a powerhouse tennis family, Christian is the proud son of Pat Harrison and grandson of Jimmy Harrison—both inducted into the Louisiana Tennis Association Hall of Fame. His uncle, Mark Harrison and three aunts, Patti,Vickie and Valerie Harrison are also inducted in the Hall of Fame.  It’s no surprise that tennis runs deep in his blood. From a young age, Christian was swinging a racket, following in the footsteps of his older brother Ryan, who would go on to make his own indelible mark on the sport.

Ryan Harrison, a household name in American tennis, climbed to a career-high singles ranking in the top 40 and soared even higher in doubles, reaching No. 16 in the world. With a French Open doubles title in 2017 and nearly $5 million in career prize money, Ryan’s legacy was cemented. When he retired in 2024, he left behind not only an impressive resume but also a trail blazed for Christian to follow.

Christian joined the professional ranks in 2012 and wasted no time teaming up with Ryan. Together, the Harrison brothers made a memorable run to the quarterfinals of the US Open in doubles—a moment that etched their bond and talent into Grand Slam history.

But Christian’s journey hasn’t been without hardship. Plagued by injuries throughout the early years of his career, many wondered if his full potential would ever be realized. However, in true Harrison fashion, Christian fought back—with resilience, heart, and relentless determination.

The 2024–2025 season has been nothing short of a breakthrough for Christian. He began by capturing his 11th Challenger doubles title, pushing himself back into the ATP Top 100. Then, something special began to unfold.

Teaming up with American standout Evan King, Christian clinched his first ATP Tour doubles title at the 2025 Dallas Open. Momentum carried the pair forward, and they stunned the tennis world by winning the ATP 500 crown in Acapulco. Their chemistry and grit proved undeniable.

On the biggest stages, they continued to shine. A semifinal run at the prestigious BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells was followed by deep runs in Miami and Madrid, including another semifinal appearance. Christian’s ranking soared—cracking the Top 20 in May 2025, marking a career-high and a validation of years of perseverance.

Now, Christian Harrison stands on the brink of another career milestone—playing in the semifinals of the French Open alongside Evan King. The dream of a Grand Slam title is closer than ever.

Back home in Louisiana, the tennis community beams with pride. From local courts to the LTA Hall of Fame, the Harrison name is spoken with reverence—and now, all eyes are on Christian.

From your hometown fans and lifelong supporters: We congratulate you, Christian and Neal for winning the Australian Open!!  Go win the French26!!

Geaux Harrison! USA🎾💪
